Strength Training 101

Strength training usually refers to the practice of resistance exercises that are specifically designed to enhance physical power. It can also take many different forms, but most often is associated with the application of heavy weights. The word “strength” can mean several different things. It could be strength in an athletic sense or it could refer to muscular strength in general.


People think strength is defined by age, i.e. a young guy has to train harder and heavier than a senior guy or gal. That is not always the case. You can also perfrom strength training over 40, right up even to the grand milestone of 100, and still gain muscle. Training strength also does not mean you have to lift heavy.

One common form of strength training includes performing specific exercises in a gym setting that forces the muscles to work hard. In other words, strength training is often used as a way to stimulate and strengthen the skeletal, muscular and ligament structures. For this reason, many people who do strength training regularly, usually experience significant strength gains in their body over time.


There are many different kinds of strength training, and they vary depending on the individual’s needs. Typically, strength training consists of the use of many different types of weights, such as bars, weights, machines, and many variations of these machines. Typically, strength training requires that the person lift the weight in a certain manner in order to get the desired result.


There are many different types of weight lifting machines. These machines are designed to provide a safe and effective way for individuals to perform a variety of weight-lifting movements. They are also ideal for a beginner as they allow him or her to get used to the idea of lifting weights. One of the most common weight training machines is the barbell. Barbell exercises are great because they provide a full range of motion, which enables the person to do a full range of movements. This means that a person can do the squat, bench press, deadlift, etc. without having to worry about over-extending or under-exertion. As a result, strength training using the barbell allows you to do many different kinds of muscle groups, which in turn helps to enhance one’s overall strength.


Another form of weight lifting equipment that can be used is the dumbbell. Dumbbell exercises allow you to train all the major muscle groups without having to strain your arms or shoulders. Although dumbbell exercises are not used in the same way as traditional barbell exercises, they can still be beneficial for strengthening large muscle groups, which include your chest, back, shoulder, triceps and bicep muscles.


A few other types of weight lifting equipment that can be used like machines, which allow you to perform multi-joint exercises. Like on a smith machine you can perform a full squat with the added benefit that it is safer if something goes wrong. It is not as effective as a free weight squat but it still works the same muscle groups.

Machines are typically used by bodybuilders or athletes in order to build muscle mass and strength safely or at an angle you just can’t get with a dumbbell or barbell. One such example is the pec deck, which replaces dumbbell flyes, it is a lot kinder on the joints as well.

Most machines are equipped with a weight plate that can be adjusted so that it is more difficult or easier to lift when necessary. Most machines also have adjustable handles that allow for a person to vary the amount of weight being used.


Strength training can improve a person’s overall physical condition in several ways. Many people who do strength training regularly find that their muscle and bone health have improved considerably over time. They also find that their strength is much greater than it was before.


Some other benefits of strength training equipment include increased metabolism and improved joint health. A high intensity exercise routine allows your body to break down calories and nutrients more efficiently, making it possible for your body to burn off more energy and lose weight. Also, strength training exercise improves your range of motion and flexibility, which helps prevent injuries.


The most popular forms of strength training equipment are free weight and barbell machines. Free weight exercises require that you use free weights to lift weights. Using free weights forces you to use more of your muscles than you would with traditional weights because they are harder to control and maintain the weight. Free weights allow you to build muscle power and strength. Barbell exercises require you to use weights that are attached to a barbell.


Many people find that they get much better results with barbell exercises than with free-weight exercises, which is why many people who are not familiar with strength training often find it easier to use barbell exercises. However, free weights also provide an added benefit of being easier on joints.
